“If you consider Peaches to be ‘pop music,’ you must be a music critic (aka, you are the 1%).” —

- commenter

Has any music critic ever been the 1%?

(via katherinestasaph)

I feel an essay on critical elitism and “the cultural 1%” brewing somewhere…

“First, though, there’s the debate between Bella and most of the Cullens about whether to get rid of what’s growing inside of her. Expect much to be written about this, and for op-ed hacks on either side of the debate to squeeze Breaking Dawn for all it’s worth; the film’s actual politics are muddy. Bella, who’s willing to have the baby even though it’ll certainly kill her, could best be described as anti–life, while the vampires trying to strong-arm her might be pro–abortion, but they’re pretty determinedly anti–choice. (“Carlisle will know how to get that thing out of you,” Edward growls.) Suffering from some kind of hellish preeclampsia—her body, it’s explained, is rejecting the fetus—an increasingly cadaverous Bella stares listlessly at the X-rays and ultrasounds, which, in the film’s most affecting visual, reveal an empty black hole where the baby should be.” —Not going to see Breaking Dawn, but somehow knew Dan Kois’ review would be worth reading regardless.

“[T]he unavoidable truth [is] that [Taylor] Lautner, whose pumped physique and flat affect bring to mind one of those friendly pizza delivery boys in a pornographic movie, remains a dish best served with as few words and clothes as possible.” —

“I have a friend who likes to say that most people still talk about music as though “female” were a genre, but as today’s wide stylistic variety of women making independent music attests, there is no “female” sound. There is only the sound of being perceived female: the same old assumptions, conversations, reference points, and language— all-female, girl band, riot grrrl— reverberating through an echo chamber, hollow and fatigued.” —

Lindsay Zoladz, Not Every Girl Is A Riot Girl (via likeapairofbottlerockets)

“Women in music” articles usually make me want to die, but this one is good. You should read it.

Urgent Occupy Wall Street Ground Report
  • Sean: so
  • i marched down the middle of broadway with a puppet
  • me: puppet?
  • Sean: i didn't have the puppet
  • but there was a big statue of liberty puppet
  • me: awesome
  • what was happening in general?
  • Sean: police with riot gear are keeping everyone out of the park
  • the sidewalk is open and full of people but then that is also surrounded by riot cops
  • pretty crazy
  • but the march did entirely block broadway for a good 6 or 7 blocks
  • me: so, good job opening the park back up for people who want to use it!
  • Sean: marching down the middle of it
  • yeah
  • seriously
  • now they're claiming the protesters were "amassing weapons"
  • including cardboard tubes!
  • uh oh!

I’m putting “Super Bass” on repeat, and that’s basically it.

“Chillwave came along, and it turned ambient music into this perfume that overwhelmed the room. It used to feel therapeutic, but then it started to feel like people would put anything through three delay pedals. I think people overplay the ambience in my work, but I don’t mind. I hope nobody associates me with fucking chillwave, though. It’s a non-factor. I play rock’n’roll.” —

God I love Bradford Cox. (via likeapairofbottlerockets)

This is EXACTLY what the issue is with chillwave. Slow clap.

US wealth gap between young and old is widest ever → hosted.ap.org

justinalcon:

“The typical U.S. household headed by a person age 65 or older has a net worth 47 times greater than a household headed by someone under 35, according to an analysis of census data released Monday.

While people typically accumulate assets as they age, this gap is now more than double what it was in 2005 and nearly five times the 10-to-1 disparity a quarter-century ago, after adjusting for inflation.”

In case anyone’s still wondering, this is pretty obviously a disaster.
