I help edit Flavorwire, geek out on teen TV for the L.A. Times ShowTracker blog, and write about music for a few places. I'm also in the midst of co-editing, with Niina Pollari, a zine and book project called "It's Complicated: Feminist Writers on the Misogynist Art We Love," which you can also follow on Tumblr.
I went long on The Idler Wheel for SPIN. I was never a Fiona true believer, ever, really. Was always more interested in how people reacted and treated and fell for her. But this record, esp. “Valentine” and “Werewolf” are really something.
This is so weird, because I’ve spent the past few hours writing about how sane Fiona Apple seems to me (and, in the process, worrying about my own sanity), after a week of reading Joan Didion. My thoughts about all of it are getting a bit circular, but I keep coming back to those studies that are published periodically that inevitably reveal that depressed people have a more accurate worldview than people who aren’t depressed. Anyway, this review is great.
