TRIGGER WARNING THIS IS ABOUT RRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEE
The whole internet outrage about Tosh and rape thing (ughhhhhh) may make this little tid bit look like diddly BUT there was something pretty insidious on Newsroom last night about the rape and the women. The show is awful, obvi, but I will continue to watch it because it confirms ALL suspicions I’ve had about Sorkin! I HAVE NEVER TRUSTED YOU, BRO!!
Will invites his drunk date to his apartment. While she is slipping off her dress he looks in her puse and sees a gun. She explains, unapologetically, that she carries a gun because she’s worries about getting raped. He puts the gun in her hand, then smacks it out of her hands, then pulls the clip out and hands it back. The rest of the episode is about gun control and the NRA and Rush Limbaugh (ughhhhh) and the (drunk) woman who carries a gun out of fear of being raped is written off as an insane for the rest of the episode. She is referred to several times as crazy — including by her own friend the super smart Economist played by Olivia Munn (uuugghh).
The whole reason the woman gave for carrying a gun is not at all commented on except for a statistic spewed off by Will about how often rapes do or do not happen when a woman is carrying (LEMME MANSPLAIN THIS RAPE THING 2 U, GIRL) . We are CLEARLY meant to identify with Will’s outrage and disgust with a woman who brought a loaded gun into HIS well furnished apartment. The obvious point here: isn’t it worth ONE line of dialogue that perhaps addresses the dilemma of carrying a lethal weapon because women live with an omnipresent threat of rape? After all Will is on ‘a mission to civilize’. Sorkin doesn’t think so!
Then Gabby Giffords gets shot at the end of the episode by a lunatic with a gun.
People got mad at Lena Dunham for not fucking enough men of color on her show and this asshole gets a pass for some of the most insidiously hateful shit.

Usually I regret it when I stop watching an Important TV Show after the first episode, but with this one, I am so glad I never looked back. Maybe next week they can debunk pay inequality or the need for safe, legal abortions! There are as many possible episodes of The Newsroom as there are lady problems that need scoffing at and belittling! By the end of Season 1, rich, old, straight, white men really will have fixed the world!
