Radiohead
“Fake Plastic Trees”
Live at Glastonbury 2003

I have no way of quantifying this, but I can’t think of any line in any song that can connect with the saddest, most painful part of my psyche as powerfully as when Thom Yorke sings “if I could be who you wanted all the time.” For me, nothing hurts more than that feeling.

I have a strong hunch that there are two kinds of people in the world: the “if I could be who you wanted” people and the “if you could be who I wanted” people. The categories probably aren’t always fixed — some of us are sometimes one, sometimes the other. And maybe they’re both ways of spinning “if I could be who I wanted all the time.”
